***** BRADFIELD
Bradfield is a little village and civil parish in Berkshire.
The parish now includes the larger village of Bradfield Southend.

The village is home to the public school Bradfield College while Bradfield Southend is famous for the outdoor display of christmas lights put on by the residents of the village.

Bradfield was inherited by the Staffords who were from the De La Beche family of Aldworth. The widow of Sir Edward Stafford became the sole Lady of the Manor after her husbands death in 1623. She then went on to marry Elias Ashmole, Windsor Herald from the College of Arms. Elias Ashmole was an antiquarian who known for leaving his collection of antiques to Oxford University, now called the Ashmolean Museum. Elias Ashmole was hated by Mary's brother and her second son. Her son, Humphrey Stafford even tried to murder Elias Ashmole. Elias Ashmole and his wife were eventually hounded out of the village and forced to live in London.

In 1755 the Stevens bought the manor. A hundred years later the Reverand Thomas Stevens turned the manor house over to found Bradfield College. Rev. Thomas Stevens also rebuilt the village parish church, unsurprisingly he went bankrupt in 1881.

The Bradfield College is famous for having a 1,600 seated Greek theatre, it was built in a disused chalk pit in 1890 by the original headmaster.
Bradfield is a pleasant little village with lovely views and architecture.
There are many bed & breakfasts and guest houses in the town aswell as restaurants and pubs, so you can enjoy your time in Bradfield in comfort.
