The town is well renowned for having a great culture with one of the countries largest music festivals Reading Festival taking place here, aswell as being the home of the WOMAD festival for the past 17 years.




Reading has a fantastic arts scene with many concert halls and fine art galleries within the town. Along with the concert halls the town has several theatre's, The Hexagon and 21 South Street are two of the largest and most celebrated theatres in the county with both showing a diverse range of music and performing arts.

There are also several amateur theatres including the Progess Theatre which is a self funding theatre group and has been a registered charity since 1947.



There is a great love for sport in the area, being the centre for football and rugby union in Berkshire.

Reading football club are an established premier league club and London Irish are one of the most well supported clubs in the rugby union's Guinness Premiership with both playing their home games at the 24,500 capacity Majetski Stadium.



Similar to many Thames-side towns there are many rowing clubs in the area which would be great for any rowing enthusiasts thinking of coming to the area.

As the town used to be a major river port at the confluence of the Thames and Kennet the is a great fondness for boating in Reading

Both rivers are navigable with Caversham Lock, Blake's Lock, Fobney Lock, Southcate Lock and County lock all being within Reading. The Rivers are purely lesiure orientated now with a great number boat and barge hire businesses within the area.

Reading is often refered to as the capital of the Thames Valley due to being one of the most important commercial areas in southern England.

There are also a great amount of areas for shopping. The main retail area being Broad Street, with both The Oracle and Broad Street Mall shopping centres located on Broad Street.


There is a great history in Reading.
The town was occupied by the Vikings after the Battle of Reading in 871. In 1121 Henry I founded Reading Abbey which is now one of the greatest tourist points in the area. In the 18th Century major iron works began in Reading combined with the growth of the brewing trade which Reading has become famous for.

If you are thinking of coming to Reading for a holiday it couldnt be any easier. There are plenty of different types of accomodation to fit your needs, hotels, bed and breakfasts, cottages, self catering accomodation aswell as plenty of caravan and camping parks if you are feeling adventerous.
