***** ROYAL COUNTY OF BERKSHIRE

The Royal County of Berkshire lies to the west of London Thames valley. The county was often referred to as a Royal because of the presence of the royal residence of Windsor Castle (this title was formally ratified in 1958)

In 1974 a few major changes took place which affected this Royal County of Berkshire. Avery large area to the north west as far as Abingdon was transferred to Oxfordshire, and Slough (formerly in Buckinghamshire) became part of Berkshire

The Berkshire County Council was dissolved in 1998 when it ceased to be an administrative county, government having been devolved to six unitary district authorities. The county now exists only geographically and in ceremonial matters.
Local Government: The county of Berkshire is divided into the following six unitary authorities for local government purposes:-
1. Bracknell Forest Borough Council
2. Reading Borough Council
3. Slough Council
4. West Berkshire Council (Newbury)
5. The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead
6. Wokingham District Council

Berkshire borders the counties of Buckinghamshire, Greater London, Hampshire, Oxfordshire, Surrey and Wiltshire. The county population is over 800 000 on 472,270 acres.
